Swimming for your dog
Swimming is a great way to exercise and spend some quality time with your dog. This is an excellent exercise for dogs of all ages. Swimming offers a workout without added stress on joints, which is perfect for an older dog or a dog with arthritis.
Not all dogs are natural born swimmers and want to dive right in to the water. Many breeds such as the Retrievers will pick it up quickly while other breeds may need a bit more time to figure it out. Bringing along another dog who is already a great swimmer is a fun way for your dog to see what it’s all about. A special life jacket designed for dogs can also help you aid in teaching your dog to swim.
Introducing your dog to the water slowly and let him venture in at his own pace will help him learn to love the water. It is never a good idea to encourage a dog to jump in over its head with out knowing if the dog can swim. Wading in to a shallow area with your dog and playing with a toy is a great way to start. Once your dog is swimming well, there are many dog toys made that float which are great for playing fetch in the water.
There are many places to take your dog swimming but please remember safety first. Make sure the body of water you choose has a safe place to enter and exit and the dog knows how to get out. Currents in rivers and an undertow at the ocean can be dangerous. Ponds and pools treated with chemicals may be toxic to your dog. It is a good idea to rinse your dog with fresh water after swimming to rinse off anything that may irritate the dog’s skin. Always stay with your dog while it is in the water. If your dog is not a strong swimmer, you may consider a dog life vest.
Swimming can be strenuous on your dog so be sure and have your dog rest after a period of exercise. Offer fresh water to drink and a snack while taking a break.
