Selecting the right cat and kitty litter

Cat litter - what to look for

Looking for the perfect litter, but daunted by what's available at the supermarket or pet supply store? Like each of your felines, cat litters have distinct personalities. So it's important to choose a litter that suits your cat's personality, as well as your own.

There are several options available when choosing a cat litter: non-clumping, clumping, clay based or an alternative "natural base". These natural base litters can be made from whole-kernel corn, newspaper, pine, wheat, or citrus peels just to name a few! The important thing to remember is to choose the right litter for your cat, a texture they will prefer, a non-fragrance (cats have a very sensitive sense of smell) and something that works effectively to eliminate odors (cats don't like a messy litter box).

Not all kitty litter is created equal

We recommend a clumping litter if you require superior odor control, if you prefer to scoop clumps rather than clean out the entire litter box and if ongoing cleanliness of the litter box is important to you. There are several clumping alternative litters on the market. You simply remove the clumps daily and top off with new litter as needed to keep the level of litter in the box at 2-3 inches. It clumps very quickly, which means no moisture or mess down at the bottom of the litter box to contend with. In addition, there are no additional ingredients added to the litter that allow it to clump. The corn kernel is processed in such a way that it clumps, but is yet biodegradable and flushable. This means no health concerns to your cat and easy disposal for the owner!

Dust free cat litter - fragrance free, too!

In addition, with cats having a very keen sense of smell, choose a litter that is fragrance free. Some fragrances in litters can be very offensive to cats. If the cat is offended, this could lead to your cat not using the litter box. Also, cats like to dig and bury their waste. Make sure the litter has a soft texture and feels good on their paws.
