Ask a PetDoc: Yorkie with erections
Question: Yorkie with erections
Hi Dr. Jim,
I know this might be a weird question, but I have to ask. My 1-yr-old male Yorkie has been having constant erections. Sometimes it’ll go on for hours. He’ll just walk around with it. He won’t do the “normal” thing I guess you can say and hump everything. He was neutered about 3 months ago. But even before that he had this problem. Is this normal?
Thank you,
Jeanine
Dr. Jim says:
Jeanine,
NOT NORMAL. And, in fact, this is a medical emergency because damage can be done to the penis due to dehydration of the tissue which can lead to problems including gangrene. If sufficient tissue damage has been done the penis may need to be amputated along with removal of the prepuce. At best a surgical procedure to alter the prepuce to allow the penis back into the preputial cavity may need to be done. It is possible that this problem started with an infection of the preputial cavity which then resulted in abnormal swelling of the tissue and prevention of return to the cavity. It is very important to have your veterinarian give him a thorough examination and determine a course of treatment.
Your buddy should have been castrated at about 6 months of age. At this age a male will have developed the normal male characteristics while generally avoiding the development of bad habits.
