Ask a PetDoc: Traumatized cat

Question: Traumatized cat

Dr. Jim,

I have a 3 year old cat who is very attached to the family, especially my husband. She came up missing 3 months ago and we assumed she was dead as we live in the country. She unexpectedly returned but is so skittish and scared that she won’t let either of us touch her or get near her. She only shows up at night to eat and when we turn on the porch light or open the door she runs. What could be causing this?

Sincerely,
Leanne

Dr. Jim says:

Leanne,

She obviously had some very traumatic experiences during her 3 months away. What specifically caused her problems we will never know. Only time will tell if she can and will return to her previous loving behavior. For the time being keep doing what you are doing; feeding, talking to her in a very soft voice, and even try sitting in a chair while holding the food bowl and then place the bowl on the floor near you. An animal behaviorist may be of some help at least in giving advise about taking an approach to a form of treatment.

I once treated a dog that had been abused and developed a fear of people by putting the dog under short acting general anesthesia then sitting and talking and petting him as he recovered from the deep sleep. Case of one but it did work.
