Ask a PetDoc: Maine Coon cat won't socialize

Question: Maine Coon cat won't socialize

Hi Dr. Jim,

A friend of mine just got a Maine Coon cat. It is about 1 year old. When she got home the cat ran under her bed and will not come out. It won’t eat or drink and hasn’t gone to the litter box either. Any suggestions?

Hnkn

Dr. Jim says:

Hnkn,

This is an unfortunate situation that may not be correctable. This cat probably was not properly socialized during the formative period of about 3 to 9 weeks of age. Kittens must be handled repeatedly during this period in order for them to accept humans as a normal part of their world.

If your friend is willing to invest the time then have her try the following: Make sure a litter box containing unscented litter with some baking soda mixed in to control odor is readily available.

Have water available near the litter box. Next, warm some canned cat food, just a few tablespoons and place on the floor near the bed. Start with a 5 to 10 minute period then pick up the food and leave. Repeat the process several times during the day. Once the cat starts to eat the food the next step is for your friend to sit in the room with the food on the floor, not too near the person. Once the cat starts to come out from under the bed your friend should just talk in low tones and not make any sudden moves. Repeat this process several times. This is much like trying to socialize an adult feral cat, difficult and time consuming.

The importance of early socialization is necessary for all species and makes them a far more loving pet.
