Ask a PetDoc: How many teeth do dogs have?
Question: How many teeth do dogs have?
Dr. Jim,
How many teeth do dogs have?
Thank you,
Caitlyn
Dr. Jim says:
Caitlyn,
Dogs have no visible teeth at birth. Between 3 and 6 weeks of age the 28 baby teeth erupt. This is the time for chewing. Adult teeth erupt between 2 and 7 months of age. Animals may retain baby teeth when the adult/permanent teeth come in. These “extra” teeth need to be removed. Get your pet used to dental hygiene by brushing their teeth daily with a child’s soft bristle toothbrush and toothpaste for dogs OR use a baking soda-based toothpaste. Plan on having the teeth cleaned by your veterinarian at least once a year.
