Ask a PetDoc: German Shepherd having diarrhea and vomiting

Question: German Shepherd having diarrhea and vomiting

Dr. Jim,

I have a 2 year old Lab and an 8 year old Shepherd. I gave them a Busy Bone day before yesterday. They have had them before and have done fine with them. Today my Shepherd started having diarrhea and vomited a lot of the bone up. She won’t eat and everything she drinks comes right back up. The vomit is now clear mucus. I’ve taken her food and water away and gave her flagyl (antibacterial, antiprotozoal, antiparasitic) and famotidine (antiulcer agent and gastric acid control) but she couldn’t keep either of them down. Do you think she might have a blockage?

Sincerely,
Suzanne

Dr. Jim says:

Suzanne,

Blockage is a possibility. With a hyperactive intestinal tract an intussusception (where the intestine moves over itself causing a blockage) may occur. If this is the case this is a surgical emergency. Your dog needs to see a veterinarian ASAP. Concerns are significant: dehydration due to the vomiting, diarrhea, and your taking the water away. Another factor could be torsion (twisting) of the stomach causing bloat and death if not treated rapidly.
