Ask a PetDoc: Dog with an eye ulcer

Question: Dog with an eye ulcer

Dr. Jim,

My dog was rolled by a car about 2 weeks ago. My vet said she has an ulcer on her eye and I have been treating and it was getting better. My other dogs were playing and she joined in and yelped, her eye was wet and weeping a clear liquid. Could that mean it ruptured? And if yes should I have the eye removed?

Jerry

Dr. Jim says:

Jerry,

Any time there is possible injury to an eye it is time to visit a veterinarian to have it checked. In extreme cases a veterinary ophthalmologist may be able to suture the wound closed and add fluid to the eye chamber. If there is extensive damage then the eye should be removed.
