Ask a PetDoc: Chihuahua nausea
Question: Chihuahua nausea
Dr. Jim,
I have a 9 month old Chihuahua that is having her time of the month and she has not eaten much yesterday and nothing today and she threw up four times tonight which makes no sense considering she has not eaten. What can I do to ease the nausea and help her eat, drink, etc.?
Casper
Dr. Jim says:
Casper,
I hope you have had her to your veterinarian as I would guess that she is suffering from a serious infection of the uterus, a condition called pyometritis. This life threatening condition is most successfully treated by surgically removing the entire uterus and also the ovaries. One of the reasons that spaying at about 6 months of age is recommended is to prevent the various conditions that affect the uterus plus the prevention of pregnancy. Any time an intact bitch, female dog, has her heat period and then has increase in water consumption, creamy vaginal discharge, and distention of the abdomen then pyometritis is a distinct possibility. Your pet was probably vomiting because she had become toxic from the content of the uterus.
