Ask a PetDoc: Cat losing his fur
Question: Cat losing his fur
Dr. Jim,
My cat is constantly losing his fur. It’s all over his chair and we find small pieces here and there. Can you tell me if he has a skin problem or if he needs to go back to the vet? I had him there in July and had all the tests for him done and updated his shots and all seemed to be okay.

Dr. Jim says:
Mary,
There are a number to things that can result in hair loss. First would be the season – the air in your house is much dryer in the winter than at other times of the year. If lack of humidity is the problem it should start correcting itself in the next few weeks. Second on my list in an otherwise healthy dog or cat would be diet. If you are not feeding a good quality national brand of canned or dry food then the hair loss could be nutritional. For my own dog I add a tablespoon of sunflower oil to his food once a day during the winter months. For a cat I’d use ¼ teaspoon added to the food once daily. If the hair loss continues then he should be examined by your veterinarian to determine the underlying cause of the continued hair loss.
