Ask a PetDoc: Cat with hyperthyroidism and kidney failure
Question: Cat with hyperthyroidism and kidney failure
Dear Dr. Jim,
My cat was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism and started treatment of 5 mg methimazole (1/2 tablet 2X per day). His thyroid levels showed in the normal range after being on the treatment for several weeks. His next set of blood tests showed he was starting renal failure. Do you think if I was to proceed with the one dose treatment of intravenous radioactive material to cure the thyroid it would also help him gain his kidney function back?
He is approximately 14 years old and his kidney failure is just starting. I’ve been giving him subcutaneous fluids every other day.
Sincerely,
Karen
Dr. Jim says:
Karen,
Unfortunately kidney failure becomes very common in cats after they reach 10 years of age and older. Apparently treatment with methimazole may unmask hidden kidney disease. I do not know if changing the treatment will change the course of the kidney problem but I would suggest you discuss doing the radio iodine treatment then putting your cat on a dietary management program for the kidney problem.
