Ask a PetDoc: Boxer getting up on couch

Question: Boxer getting up on couch

Dr. Jim,

Our 4-year-old, 80 lb. Boxer recently decided to sleep on our new couch. We’ve never let him on furniture in the past (he has a dog bed) so this is new behavior. What is the best way to prevent him from climbing on the couch at night or during the day when we are out of the house? My wife wants to use one of those “scat Mats” but that seems expensive and a bit overkill.

Brad

Dr. Jim says:

Brad,

There are a few approaches you can take to keep the big guy off the furniture. One would be to use the scat mat but you would have to purchase or borrow 2 or 3 of them to take care of that large a piece of furniture. Another would be to place a barrier on the couch using books, pillows, pieces of wood, etc. to take up the space and make it uncomfortable for him to lay down. If your dog is smart he will figure out that he can simply get on the furniture then push the items off onto the floor then take his nap.

Another approach, which works for cats and dogs on counters, tables, etc is to randomly place two-sided tape on the couch fabric (be sure to test the tape in an inconspicuous area first to determine that it does not affect the color of the fabric). With the tape you must remember to remove it so you don’t become attached to the fabric. I’ve also used a spray bottle with water giving a very loud "BAD DOG" while spraying him in the face.  You have to catch him in the act for it to have any effect.  Of all the ones I’ve suggested I like the barrier method the best.

You can also get him a new bed, one of the orthopedic variety, it has a foam inner liner that is shaped like an egg carton. Place the bed next to the couch. When he comes in and lays on it really, really praise him.
