Ask a PetDoc: Beagle with a spinal cord injury
Question: Beagle with a spinal cord injury
Dr. Jim,
My 12-year-old Beagle recently hurt her back. After testing it was concluded that she has a spinal cord injury as she is not walking and can’t place her back legs on the ground. She has received and injection of steroid and I have given her some prednisone tablets. If she cannot walk and I can’t afford the surgery, could she live with a doggie wheelchair? Would her health deteriorate quickly because of this condition? Have you ever seen a dog live through this situation?
Sincerely,
Martha
Dr. Jim says:
Martha,
First of all, yes I have seen pets do quite well using a doggy cart. The cart is used to support the hind quarters so the pet can get around. It takes a little work on your part putting on and taking off the cart and paying special attention to the areas where rubbing may occur so that sores do not develop. If the condition is simply damage to the spinal cord and not a tumor or infection this should not have a significant impact on her overall health. Just remember that controlling body weight is important.
Do an online search for doggy carts or wheel chairs. Be prepared for sticker shock as some of these devices are very expensive.
