Lots of reason for using a pet sitter. Some will stay overnight. Boarding a pet can be too stressful for some.
A pet sitter also brings in the mail, takes care of plants, and puts the garbage out for pickup and brings back in after pickup.
My pets got their normal diets and remail in their familar home. So much less stress on them. And convenient, not rushing off trying to get 2 cats into crates and the dog to get them to the kennel then have to pick them up again.
Nothhing worse than taking the cats to the boarding kennel only for them to get so stressed out that one develop fatty liver disease then spending several thousands of dollars in vet bills to get him well. Fortunately he is pulling through but now the pet sitter stays overnight when no one is home due to work and vacation trips. The pet sitter stayed with the pets and managed to spoon feed the sick cat and after 6 weeks the cat started to show much improvement. He really got better after the sitter stayed a few days...she was spoon feeding him during TV commercial breaks and just the little bit of food she was able to get him to swallow was able to reverse the liver breakdown. She comes over when just the hubby is home to make sure fresh food, water, clean box and TLC is given as well as give him the meds hubby is not able to do. The sitter saved the life of the cat!!! Now he is off of all meds. And the dog is also more relaxed as are the other cats.
A professional sitter is reasonable for the amount of time and work done at the home, just 65 (75 well deserved dollars with the tip) dollars a night and often there over 12 hours. (states 9 hours a night but was staying much longer and returning in the the daytime to be with the animals. ) So less than boarding 3 or 4 pets and they are so much happier!
Happy pets get to stay at home!
http://www.petsitfinder.com/ has zipcode search for finding a pet sitter and mentions if they are Insured.
Check with your vets for other recommendations and for references. Ours has a very good webpage with experience as a registered vet tech with lots of experience.
