Kuba’s Fish Special
Kuba’s Fish Special
From The Ultimate Pet Food Guide by Liz Palika
Hard working dogs and competitive performance dogs need a special diet. These dogs burn up energy at an amazing rate while working, training and competing and the daily food must replenish that. Because this recipe is high carbohydrate and high fat, however, the amount fed each day must reflect that day’s activity level. If the dog is going to be (or has been) working hard, increase the amounts fed. If the dog is going to have a few days off to relax and recuperate, decrease the amount of food fed.
This recipe, at about 3500 calories (275 grams of protein, 90 grams of carbohydrates and 190 grams of fat) is for a hard working 40 to 50 pound dog; an agility competitor, a working herding dog on a ranch, or search and rescue dog who trains and works hard every day.
2 pounds mackerel, raw, deboned
4 eggs, goose
2 cups pasta
½ cup cheese, cheddar, grated
1. Preheat oven to 450 degrees.
2. Wrap the mackerel in foil, place in baking pan and bake until done; usually about 10 minutes per inch of thickness of the meat.
3. While the fish is cooking, put the pasta in a saucepan and cook until soft.
4. When the fish is done, pull the pan out of the oven, unwrap the fish and pull it apart (carefully, it’s hot) until the meat is completely shredded.
5. When the pasta is done, drain off most of the water and add the pasta to the fish in the pan.
6. Crack the four goose eggs over the pasta and fish and then stir the mixture, breaking the egg yolks and making sure everything is well mixed.
7. Sprinkle the cheddar cheese over the mixture.
8. Put back in the oven and bake for about ten minutes or until the eggs are thoroughly cooked and the cheese is melted.
Remove the pan from the oven and let the food cool. Divide into two or three meals (as many as your dog is used to eating in a day). Store in the refrigerator.
Suggested daily supplements (See Chapter 6) could include:
· A good quality, natural vitamin and mineral supplement.
· A fatty acid supplement, such as chicken fat, cod liver oil, salmon oil, fish oil, or safflower oil.
· A bone meal supplement; either natural bone meal, finely ground egg shells, or a calcium lactate supplement.
· A green food supplement, such as blue-green algae, spirulina, or barley grass.
· A health food blend, such as Springtime, Inc.’s Tonic Blend or Tri-Natural Product’s Missing Link.
Supplements should be added as the food is served.
Food will remain good in the refrigerator for two to three days.
Variations:
1. Substitute another cold water, oil rich fish in place of the mackerel.
2. Substitute mozzarella cheese in place of the cheddar cheese.
