Ask a PetDoc: Boxer with crusty, flaky nose
Question: Boxer with crusty, flaky nose
My 11-year-old Boxer’s nose is crusty and flaky. It is on the top part of the nose (not by the nostrils). How do we treat this?
Thanks, Betsy
Dr. Jim says:
Betsy,
First we need to eliminate disease as a cause of the nasal crustiness and flaking. If the condition in your dog is a recent problem and no overt disease has been observed then I would suspect, knowing the length of a Boxer’s tongue, that your dog is simply licking the top of the nose causing dryness and cracking.
The saliva and enzymes remove the oils normally secreted by the cells and can lead to the crusty and flaky appearance. One option is to apply a product called Bag Balm twice a day to the affected area using a cotton swab. This product consists of lanolin (sheep wool fat) and can be purchased a sewing supply shops or farm stores.
As a side note, Bag Balm is also good on elbow calluses on dogs that often lie on hard surfaces. It can also be helpful for fried and cracked foot pads. The feet should be covered with a sock. Remember that this stuff is very greasy and will allow you’re pet to leave greasy nose prints or paw prints here and there.
