Ask a PetDoc: Black lab with a digging problem
Question: Black lab with a digging problem
Hi Dr, Jim,
I have a one year old black lab puppy. We just moved from an apartment into a house with a big yard and she keeps digging holes. Is there any way to train her to stop the digging?
Thanks!
Bongo
Dr. Jim says:
Bongo,
Digging is a natural behavior for dogs but some dogs overdo it. Your dog may simply be a compulsive digger and you should train her to dig in a spot that is ok. Use a treat carrier that you can bury in the selected spot and further reward her when she only digs in that location.
More likely she is going for rodents like mice, moles or voles, that live in the turf root system. The varmints are there looking for grubs and other insects to fill their belly. Get rid of the insects and you will reduce the presence of the rodents. Make sure that you carefully read the label from any insecticides that you use. Most will tell you how long to keep your pet from being on the treated area. If no information is on the label contact the manufacturing company and ask to talk to someone from technical services. Explain that you have a dog and ask how long to keep her off the treated yard and what signs might occur if she does get into the chemicals.
