Yorkshire Terrier
Overview
This tiny terrier was developed in Great Britain from several ancient terrier breeds. Although very much a companion dog, the Yorkie was also used as a vermin hunter.
Height
8 to 9 inches tall
Weight
Under 7 pounds
Color
The Yorkie is black or silver/blue with tan on the head, under the tail, and on the legs.
Coat type
The coat is long and without trimming it can fall to the floor. The texture is very silky and is parted along the spine from the head to the base of the tail.
Grooming
This coat needs daily combing to prevent tangles in the hair. Many owners will schedule professional grooming visits on a monthly basis to keep the coat trimmed. The ears and teeth need weekly cleaning, and the toenails should be trimmed on the same schedule.
Life expectancy
14 to 16 years
Temperament
Although tiny in physical size, Yorkies have big personalities. They have no idea they're small and walk with a swagger. Unfortunately, this can get them into trouble with larger dogs. Yorkies are bright and intelligent but can also be stubborn. This breed is too small and fragile to be a good playmate for children.
Activity level
These little dogs love to play and will chase a ball or toy in the backyard or just across the room. They love to go for walks, make super therapy dogs, and great agility dogs. Yet when the fun is over, they are just as eager to curl up on the sofa right next to you.
Training
Housetraining Yorkies can be a challenge. Owners need to establish a schedule, stick to it, limit the dog's freedom in the house, and be patient. Yorkie puppies need kindergarten classes so that they can socialize with other puppies and people as they can have aggressive tendencies.
