Dry swollen spot on my labrador's elbow

My dog has this odd patch on his passenger side front elbow that I can't seem to figure out. It started out as three little white lines on the elbow where he seemed to be missing fur, almost like psoriasis. I've kept an eye on it to see if any change was noticable and recently the white line on the top as developed into a swollen bump in the middle of the line and the fur has thinned out around it some. He doesn't seem to it or bite at it and doesn't really mind me touching it so I don't think it's causing him any discomfort. Does anybody know what this might be?

It is always best to have problems checked by the vet but it sounds like your dog may have the start of a Hygroma.  A Hygroma is a lump of fluid and tissue that forms over an area where a bone protudes like the elbow as a result of repeated truama, like laying on hard surfaces.  Unless it gets infected, it is not painful.  It is most common in bigger breed dogs because they are putting more weight on the area.  If it is a Hygroma, trying to encourage your dog to use a bed will help prevent further swelling to the area.  An orthopedic bed for dogs is great for this situation because they are designed to distribute the weight evenly placing less pressure on the joints.

I grew up with a lab and as she got older, she developed the same sort of bald, bumpy spots on her elbows. I think it's just something that comes with age.
