Sentinel Heartworm Preventative - Diarrhea in dogs

I have 2 dogs, a long haired chihuahua (8.5lbs) and a cokapoo (7lbs).  Both were tested heartworm negative and stool cleared for worms or parasites and started Sentinel Heartworm Preventative yesterday.  Today within a couple of hours they've both begun to have diarrhea and they are not eating well.  Is this a serious side-effect?  Will it go away on its own? Do I bring them to a vet?  Will is happen every month I give them a pill?  Any guidance for a worried dog mommy?

My2dogs, I am sorry to hear your dogs are not feeling well.  It is impossible to say for certain how an animal will react to a particular medication before it is given.  One animal may be fine with a drug and the next unable to tolerate the same drug.  While most heartworm preventatives are tolerated by the majority of the dogs treated, there will always be exceptions.

Whenever you notice anything out of the ordinary after having given a medication to your animal, it is best to call your vet and let them know about it.  The vet will be able to best decide the severity of the side effect and choose a coarse of treatment if neccesary.

There are other choices of heartworm preventative available that may be more agreealbe for your dogs.  Ask your vet what else they may offer that can replace the Sentinel.  Good luck and I hope your dogs are feeling better soon!
