recent aggressive behavior

I have a Jack Russell Terrier that is almost 7 years old.  I have only had him for a year, though.  He has never shown any kind of aggressive behavior with other dogs since I have had him, and his previous owner never mentioned any either.  I live with my parents and their Beagle/Austrailian Cattle Dog mix has been aggressive with females before, and since we moved to our new neighborhood has been "territorial" with other dogs in the area.

Now, Avery (my JRT) is starting to display aggressive behavior with other dogs during our walks.  This is only happening in the last few weeks.  Previously he had always been very social and friendly with other animals.  Any advice?

Thomas, it is difficult to know exactly why your dog is starting to show a bit of aggression.  Dogs can react to stress and change in many ways, including aggression.  Sometimes a dog may display behavior when alone that is different than when they are with another dog as well.  The 'pack mentality" if you will.

On occasion an underlying medical condition of either the dog or his owner can cause a dog to show aggression.  It is always best to rule out any medical issues with a complete physical at the vets.  That way you know if it is purely behavioral or not.

A professional behaviorist and trainer is always the safest bet for an aggression issue.  Ask your vet for a  recommendation for a good one in your area or consult a JRT group for some names.  I hope this helps and I wish you good luck!
