We have a 3 yr old mini aussie who just gave birth to 3 pups 2 days ago. She is very anxious and whining doesn't seem to be able to just lay back and let them nurse all the time. Her last two teats were very hot and hard so we pumped off some milk and washed her teats with a warm cloth. Is there anything else we can do for her?
Suzette, preparing for labor can certainly be stressful. She could have worked herself up enough to vomit. If she was bred on June first than she should be due between July 29th and August 2nd (59 to 63 days gestation). Having said that, there can be exceptions and it sounds like she may be ready to have pups any time now. I would let her do her own thing and as long as you are prepared with a whelping box, in a quiet out of the way place and she is still drinking ok, you could watch her over the next several hours to see if starts labor. It would be a good idea to give your vet a call to let them know what is happening just in case she is in need of some assistance. They may also want to set up a tail docking appointment which is usually done between 2 and 5 days after the pups are born.
After delivery, I am sure Mom will be ready for something to eat and she will settle down a bit. It is helpful for her while she is nursing to eat a puppy formula to keep up her calories. Good luck and let us know who it goes!
