PLEASE HELP!!!! Diarrhea for 1 week now
Help please! Our nine year old german shepard has been having diarrhea for about a week now. There has been no changes to his diet. He does get less exercise now due to the fact that he limps when he goes walking with my husband who walks very fast. In fact, no one here in our small town can keep up with my husband. I walk him, but I'm a slow walker due to a knee replacement in both knees with the last one just two months ago. We give him Frontline plus once a month, and his diet is Purina dog chow with 1/2 can of alpo mixed in at 5:00pm every day. He gets a beggin strip and a chicken jerky that has glucosamine/chondroitin in the morning and another chicken jerky before his evening meal. Should I call my vet and make an appointment for him as soon as possible, or should I try the chicken/rice diet for 24 hours?

My dog had diarrhea for over 2 months. She was totally healthy. Nothing worked. No antibiotics...no holistic powder that went in her food. We did all the stool tests and all came back normal.
Finally, my vet said stop everything and begin again. We started her on 1/2 can Science ID (for gastrointestinal ease) and 1/2 cup Science Diet ID dry food. One feeding in the a.m. and one feeding in the late afternoon. She was NOT allowed ANY treats at all NONE. (I was giving her Milk Bones...Snausages...all sorts of treats because we are also training her). The only treat she can have was purchased at the Vets - Biscotti (or close to that. They have NO preservatives and are like little croutons made of liver. Trust me. In a few days of NO treats - your dog will love those. We also buy her distilled water in jugs.
It is a miracle. Her diarrhea has now stopped. Actually, it stopped within a few days!!!! It was all those treats inbetween meals that we all love to give our dogs. Poor thing can't even chew on a rawhide bone which she loved. She can only have Nyla Bones...and NONE of my dogs EVER liked those. But again, if they have nothing but their food...they will actually start enjoying Nyla Bones.
Good luck to you all.
Phoebe, yes, I would call your vet asap. Diarrhea that has gone on that long, especially in a geriatric dog can be an indication of a more serious medical condition. It does not take long for a dog to become dehydrated in that situation. Good luck and we would love to hear your dog is feeling better soon!
