My Dog's Ears

I have noticed here lately that she is shaking her head alot and she scratches at her ear. At first i just noticed her shaking her head, like she was trying to get something off of her head. She has been scratching at her ear. I looked inside of her ears and they do not appear to be red on the inside.

Anyone have any clue what may cause her to do this?

My dogs ear keeps filling up with half fluid half blood it is gross.i dont have the money to fix it is there any solution to a hematoma it burtsed once and it keeps on draining filling back up so i keep draining it sounds gross but it doesnt seem to bother him to much when i  drain it this has been going on for 2 weeks now i was hoping it would dry out.any info would help me out

An aural hematoma is the result of a dog shaking it's head from side to side.  It usually requires a minor surgery to fix it.  It would really be helpful to know why your dog is shaking  his head.  A problem in the ear such as a yeast infection, bacterial infection or ear mites can bother dog so much it causes him to shake his head.

Treating the problem inside the ear is as important as treating the hematoma.  Both of these conditions can be very painful for the dog.  Chronic ear infections that are not treated can cause permanent damage to the ear drum and hearing loss.

It sounds like you are in a tough spot and cannot get him to the vet but he really needs to be treated.  It may be worth calling around to see if any vet may possibly have a payment plan option.  Sometimes a local humane society will help with medical expenses in a situation like yours.

Good luck and I hope your dog is feeling better soon!

sounds like ear mites..i just realized today my dog had them..if there is alot of yucky crusty wax and stuff and a bad smell he might still have mites..i would go to wallmart or a cheap place,,get mite medicine for dogs and start treatring it..if it goes away he had mites..you cant always see them..i can see them on my dog..if you look really close on the inside of his ear you might see one..they hide very wel

goodluck

Donna, your dog may have the beginnings of an ear infection.  The canal goes in quite a ways and you would not be able to see in there where it could be starting.  Dogs with ears that hang over the ear opening are much more suseptible to infections because the ear cannot get aired out and it is the perfect trap for bacteria.  It is best to see the vet if it continues much longer because too much head shaking can actually cause another problem called an Aural Hematoma which is when the ear flap becomes swollen and then makes the opeing to the ear much smaller.  Then you have two problems to treat at twice the cost.
