eye discoloration

My cat has a dark line in his left eye. It hasnt always been there. It's not a spot, it looks like a shadow almost. It doesn't effect his vision at all, he never runs into things, he has had no personality changes at all, and never seems sad or fatigued, and there's no discharge or issues with him opening his eyes etc. I'm just worried about why there would be a change like that- if it's somehow connected to something neurological or a sign of a bigger problem? If anyone knows anything about it either way I would appreciate the input.

Hey Ferd....

  • I'm not sure if you are describing a color change in the Iris or not. I can tell you about our experience and you decide if it applies...
  • I noticed discoloring on one of my cat's cornea's- the outside layer.
  • After a Vet visit it turns out my cat's eye had been scratched, probabably by my other cat.......and probably in response to  one of the eye-scratched cat's playful but persistant pounces.
  • The shaded area was the heeled "scar tissue".
  • At this point my Vet pointed out that the scratch, though perminent, had already heeled. Unless I wanted to have the N.C State Vets School eye specialist give her very intrusive and expensive eye surgery, which would include several operations, I was encouraged to let the matter rest. My cat never seemed to noticed and did not seem affected by her disability.
  • I am comfortable I made the best decision for her.
  • Ironically, now I have a somewhat similar scar on my cornea. I am comfortable simply living with it.
  • As I am NOT a Vet, I do not know if our experiences at my home are relevant to yours but perhaps this info may be of some use to you.
  • Good luck in your search and please be sure to let us know how it turns out.

Ferdmcbird, I am not sure exactly what it is that you are describing but here is a diagram of the structure of the cat eye.  I hope this helps!  Good luck!
