the disapering reapering cat
hello,
my name is matt, and i at one time owned two cats one was black with white face and paws (panda) and the other was white with black and brown stripe patches (patches). both are indoor/out door cats. now i have never had any worries about letting either of the cats out because one day they had actualy hunted down a fox. usualy they will go out for half an hour or so and come back. some times though they can be gone all night so i just stay up for an hour or so and if they dont come back they will be at the door in the mornig ready for breakfast. early this past winter i came home from a late shift and as usual panda went out and had to do his thing. he didnt come back that night "ok i will see him in the morning" i thought. he didnt come back and for three or four month i havent seen him but today he came back. the other cat dosent like him any more, is their any way for me to re-establish panda in the house or will patches never accept him again?

Matt, I am happy to hear Panda has come home. Patches has probably gotten somewhat use to not having to share his space and Panda probably smells very different. I would recommend starting over as if the cats had never met each other. Giving each his own space with his own set up of food, water and a litter box. It may even be a good idea to keep a door closed between them when you are not home.
When you can supervise the cats, let them check each other out at their own pace. If there is a negative altercation, separate them (carefully) and try again the next day. Toys and treats are a good way to relieve anxiety among cats. Reward them with a treat for periods of time spent near each other without hissing or growling. Try and give equal attention to both cats so Patches does not feel pushed aside.
I too let my cats out and one thing that has helped condition my cats to come back in before dark is a bit of can food reward. They know they get it when they come in and they do not get to go back out. I also have microchipped both of my cats so if they do get lost, and end up at a shelter or at a vet office, they will be scanned and returned to me.
This is not for everyone, but I also created an in only door in my basement so if I am not home at can food time, they will let themselves in and are safe for the night. I took out the small window, made an insulated wood panel and installed a cat door (in the panel) that can only swing in and put it in the place of the window. The only downside is the occasional wildlife they bring in. It can be a bugger to get those little creatures back out!
I wish you good luck and let us know how things are going.
