Cut on front paw
Written by danelleaslick
My 5 month old Labradore mix came inside one night and his front paw was bleeding. We monitor everything he could have gotten into, and nothing would explain this large cut. The vet is even unsure what caused it.
Now the cut is becoming larger, and bleeds whenever he walks. What do you suggested we do to help him to mainly stop the bleeding. Although it does not seem to bother him, it frightens me.

Dannellea, sorry to hear your pooch cut his paw. A wound on the paw is tricky because it rarely gets a break, especially with a puppy. The open area needs to have time to heal with out the pressure of walking, which is probably what is keeping it open.
If you can try and keep your pup quiet for a few days, limit walking and distract him with some chew toys that would keep him entertained while lying down, you may see some improvement. You can clean it yourself with an antibacterial agent like Betadine and then apply a topical antibiotic cream like Neosporin two to three times a day.
Bandaging doesn't usually work well in this situation because not too many puppies will tolerate a bandage and the foot is in constant motion making it difficult to keep on. If a bandage should get wet from chewing or going outside, it can cause more harm than good.
If you see any signs of infection such as the area around the wound is swollen or the dog is mopey or does not want to eat, give your vet a call. Good luck!
