cat eye

Hi!

I have 3 cats; about one year ago, one of them started to have discharge from her eye. The eye looked like it is covered with something like plastic. I took her to the doctor and the doctor gave me antibiotic and steroids to use for 3 weeks. I used that medicine as the doctor prescribed even thou it was very hard to do, because the cat was frightened and did not like eye drops. Drops not always got in to the eye. After 3 weeks I went back to the doctor and she said that an eye condition is improved. That was true, the cloudy eye was almost gone, and there was only little spot of cloudiness. I was hoping that the cat will heal itself completely, however   the condition of the eye slowly got worse, and the eye become not only completely cloudy but also had redness on it and discharge. I went again to the different doctor but he did not give me any medicine. He said that I have to go to the cat eye specialist, but it is not worth to go, because to see such a doctor cost a lot of money, that doctor lives in different city and my cat is not completely blind just a half of one eye is cloudy. Now the condition of the eye is worsening and I do not know what to do. Could you give me any suggestions?

Eyres, about 2 years ago i adopted a kitten and she was always sick i was in and out of the vet for 3 months with her. Her eye became cloudy like your cats, and i went to the vet and they as well told me to go to a cat eye specialist. I went there and although it was expensive (about $150) it really did help. There is a virus called FIP or the Corona virus and its like feline AIDS. there is no cure and things for the cat will just get worse. the eye specialist told me to go back to the vet to have my kitten tested for it. it came out positive and we had to put her to sleep. but if i didnt find out so soon my kitten would have suffered and been in alot of pain. i hope your cat doesnt have that but its better for your cat to get the care she needs, so i think you should really take her to the eye specialist. if u have any questions feel free to email me princesspunky4u@aol.com  ... hope that helped!

Eyres, I understand your hesitation on traveling and spending the money for a specialist, but in most cases they are worth the trip.  Eyes are what they do and they have seen every problem an eye can have and know what to do about it.  My concern is that your cat may be uncomfortable and that if left untreated for an extended period of time the condition may turn into something much worse.

If you are unable to go to the Veterinary Ophthamologist, maybe you could return to your original vet and see what can be done from there.  Sometimes they are willing to do a conslult over the phone with the specialist.   If you have trouble medicating your cat, maybe they would also be willing to board your cat and treat the eye for you.
