Can I change my dog's name?

I am about to adopt a 4 year old Boxer and I want to change his name. Is this a bad idea? I don't want to totally confuse the dog, but I really would love to go with a new name. Just so you know, we currently have another dog in the house. My thoughts were that perhaps the name doesn't matter so much since they will most likely both come whenever called, anyway...

I have never tried changing a name but what I have heard is that you can use the old name and the new name together for a while and then eventually drop the old name. I think it is helpful if the names sound similar. Good luck.
