PappyPoms, I am so sorry for your loss, I can only imagine how difficult it must be for you. Losing a pet is never easy and not knowing why makes it all that much harder.
It is so hard to say what could have caused your dogs kidneys to fail. In addition to antifreeze, insecticides, fertilizers, rodent poison and medications, a few other things that can cause kidney problems and/or failure include wild mushrooms, toxic plants, contaminated bark mulch, grapes and raisens.
Other conditions that can cause kidney failure would include Leptospirosis, a tick borne disease and renal dysplasia. Again, it is really difficult to arrive at an exact cause of the kidney failure with out a clear picture of what was going on inside. Unfortunately, as hard as it may be to accept, you may never know for sure what happened.
To be on the safe side, it may worth a complete blood work up and ultra sound of the kidneys on Prince to make sure he has not been affected with something that could cause him to have kidney failure. Talk it over with your vet to see what they recommend and they may be able to do some diagnostic tests or refer you to a specialist who can.
I hope this helps and I have included a few links (in blue) to some additional information you may find helpful. Please know our thoughts are with you, take care.
