10 green cat and dog tips

Going green means looking for ways to help the Earth in all areas of our lives. We can be Earth-responsible when caring for our pets, too.

10) Buy recycled toys

Cat and dog toy manufacturers are starting to produce toys made from recyclable materials. Support their effort to be green.

9) Re-purpose old cat litter

If you have moles, pour some used cat litter into mole tunnels in your backyard instead of using traps or poisons. Moles hate the smell of soiled cat litter.

8) Consider composting dog waste

If you have a backyard, get a dog waste composter. You can put it in the ground and drop your dog’s feces in it, along with a special enzyme that helps it decompose. See our DIY tip for instructions.

7) Use biodegradable cat litter

Shop for cat litter that degrades in the environment. It’s healthier for your cat, too!

6) Use natural cleaners to clean up after your pet

All-natural, biodegradable cleaners are available in health stores. You can also use a mixture of vinegar and water.

5) Use old towels to clean your dog instead of paper towels

If your dog gets dirty or wet, avoid using paper towels to clean or dry him off. Instead, opt for an old towel that can be reused.

4) Use Earth-friendly shampoo

Use products that are biodegradable when you bathe your cat or dog. Make sure the material used to make the container is recyclable.

3) Buy organic food and catnip

Organic dog food and catnip are available at pet supply stores. By purchasing these products, you are helping to keep the environment clean.

2) Reuse plastic bags to pick up dog waste

Instead of buying plastic poop bags, reuse plastic bags from the grocery store to pick up dog waste.

1) Recycle pet food cans and bags

Rinse empty pet food cans and recycle them. Put empty foods bags in the paper recycling bin.
