Shih Tzu
Overview
As with many very old breeds, the Shih Tzu's history is murky. However, experts do know that for thousands of years, this toy breed from China was bred to be a companion to people.
Height
8 to 11 inches tall
Weight
9 to 16 pounds
Colors
White is the most common color but this breed can also be cream, red, brown, grey, or black.
Coat type
The outer coat is long and flowing and the undercoat is soft.
Grooming
This coat needs daily work to keep it looking nice. The entire coat, including the hair on the face, feet, belly and tail, need to be thoroughly brushed and combed to prevent hair tangles from forming. The ears and teeth need to be cleaned weekly, and toenails trimmed on the same schedule. Many Shih Tzu owners take their dogs in to a professional groomer every four weeks for a grooming and hair cut; however, these dogs will still need to be combed and brushed in between these appointments.
Life expectancy
14 to 16 years
Temperament
As befits a breed who has served as companion to people, these dogs are bright, cheerful, and are happy to follow you from room to room around the house. They will bark when people come to the house but quickly settle down.
Activity level
Shih Tzus love to play but only when you are playing, too. They will enjoy a daily walk but will also enjoy lying at your feet. Shih Tzus are good with kids as long as the kids are not too rough.
Training
Housetraining this breed can sometimes be a challenge. Owners need to set up a schedule, stick to it, and supervise the dogs closely in the house. Be patient, too, as the dogs learn; it just takes them a little longer.
