Shar-Pei
Overview
The Chinese Shar-Pei is over two thousand years old and originated, as the name suggests, in China. At several times during the breed’s history, efforts by China’s rulers to eradicate pet dogs have almost driven the breed to extinction. The breed is most recognizable by its loose skin on the face, neck, and shoulders, and the meaty, well padded muzzle and face.
Height
18 to 20 inches tall
Weight
45 to 60 pounds
Color
Solid colors with some darker shading on the muzzle. Shades of reddish brown are most common.
Coat type
The coat is harsh and short, and stands out from the skin like a brush.
Grooming
At least once each week, run a soft bristled brush over the coat, and at the same time, the dog’s teeth should be brushed, the ears cleaned, and the toenails trimmed.
Life expectancy
12 to 14 years
Temperament
This is not a breed for first time dog owners; they are devoted to family but extremely wary of strangers. They can be standoffish and are often stubborn and independent. Many owners say they are more cat-like than dog-like. They need an owner who understands the breed and enjoys it without trying to turn it into a Golden Retriever or Labrador Retriever.
Activity level
A Shar-Pei will enjoy a good walk and a chance to play every day, but is usually quiet in the house.
Training
Because they are wary of strangers, early socialization is important. Training is also important, not just to teach the dog social rules, but also so the dog and owner learn how to communicate with each other.
