Grooming
The coat should be brushed several times per week. Show dogs are hand stripped which requires special knowledge; pet dogs are usually professionally groomed every four to six weeks. At least once each week, the dog's teeth should be brushed, the ears cleaned, and the toenails trimmed.

Temperament
Although still excellent vermin hunters, Scotties are also companion dogs and like to spend time with their people. They are good with children but will not tolerate rough play or disrespect. They can be dog aggressive.
Activity level
These dogs are moderately active; they like to play but also enjoy snuggling on the sofa.
Training
Scotties can be a challenge to train; they can be independent and stubborn.
