Saint Bernard

Overview

Long before they gained popularity as a rescue dog in the Swiss Alps, Saints were versatile farm dogs.

Height

25 to 30 plus inches

Weight

120 to 180 plus pounds

Color

White with red or brindle markings

Coat type

Two coat types:

  • Short coat: The short coat is short and smooth with a thick dense undercoat.
  • Long coat: Medium length, with a plumed tail. The undercoat is thick and dense.

Grooming

Both coat types need weekly brushing. At least once each week, the dog's teeth should be brushed, the ears cleaned, and the toenails trimmed.

Life expectancy

8 to 10 years

Temperament

Saints are affectionate and loyal. Puppies are silly, rowdy and clumsy and may be too much for small children. Saints drool.

Activity level

These dogs need daily walks and play sessions but then are usually willing to nap.

Training

Training is important as these are large, powerful dogs who could easily overpower a person.

  • Sensitivity to hear (weather)
  • Allergies
  • Seizure disorders
  • Hip dysplasia
