Pug

Overview

Pugs originated in China thousands of years ago as companion dogs and they have been exactly that throughout their history.

Height

10 to 11 inches tall

Weight

14 to 18 pounds

Color

Fawn, apricot, silver or black

Coat type

Short and smooth

Grooming

Brush the coat, clean the ears, trim the toenails, and brush the teeth on a weekly basis. The facial wrinkles will need to be cleaned daily.

Life expectancy

13 to 16 years

Temperament

Pugs are silly little clowns who love to be the center of attention. They can be too small for very young children but are wonderful companions for older kids who know to be gentle.

Activity level

Obesity is a problem so daily exercise is needed to keep the Pug moving. However, the very short muzzle can also cause breathing problems so avoid exercise or play times in hot, humid weather.

Training

Housetraining can be a challenge. Owners must adhere to a schedule, supervise the Pug puppy inside the house, and be patient.
