Poodle (standard)
Overview
Although all three sizes of Poodles (toys, miniatures and standards) share the same ancestry, they have also been bred in three sizes for a long time. Many experts believe the Standard size is the oldest. These dogs were used to retrieve birds.
Height
15 inches tall and taller
Weight
50 to 75 pounds
Color
The coat can be white, apricot, red, silver, or black but must be a solid color with no spots or patches.
Coat type
The coat is curly and thick.
Grooming
The coat should be brushed and combed daily as it will tangle and matt very quickly. Many Poodle owners schedule regular appointments with a professional groomer to bathe, trim and brush the dog's coat but the coat also requires care at home in between these appointments. The Poodle's ears need weekly cleaning and care. Also, the teeth need cleaning and the toenails trimmed weekly as well.

Temperament
Standard Poodles are wonderful family dogs and enjoy interacting with both adults and children. They are bright, intelligent and are good with other dogs and pets.
Activity level
Standard Poodles are active, athletic dogs who need daily, vigorous exercise. These are not couch potatoes! Many thrive in canine sports, including obedience, agility, Frisbee, flyball, and serve as wonderful service dogs and therapy dogs.
Training
Standard Poodles need early training and socialization, but training should continue as this breed is capable of much more than the basic obedience commands. Poodles are great with trick training, hand signals, scent discrimination and more.
