Grooming
Dogs who compete in conformation dog shows must be groomed using a technique called hand stripping. This requires some special skills. If you wish to hand strip your schnauzer, either a groomer experienced in terriers or a schnauzer breeder can teach you how to do this. Most pet owners have the dog professionally groomed, keeping the coat short and manageable, and the groomer uses clippers to trim the coat. In between grooming sessions, the coat should be combed and brushed twice a week. Ears and teeth should be cleaned weekly, and toenails trimmed on the same schedule.
Life expectancy
14 to 16 years
Temperament
These dogs are loyal and affectionate to family members, including children. They can be quite watchful and protective. If not taught to stop, they can become problem barkers.
Activity level
This breed needs daily exercise, in the form of a walk and in play sessions. If they don't run and play, they can get into trouble.
Training
Early training is very important to teach household rules and social manners. These dogs are bright and can also be stubborn. Socialization with other dogs is important as they can be aggressive towards strange dogs.
