Keeshond

Overview

Keeshonden (multiple Keeshond) are descended from spitz type dogs of northern Europe. The breed’s fans are devoted and say there is no breed quite like this one.

Height

17 to 18 inches

Weight

30 to 45 pounds

Color

Gray and black with silver and cream

Coat type

The undercoat is very thick. The outer coat is abundant and stands out from the body.

Grooming

The coat is not prone to matting; however, the coat does shed and needs regular, thorough brushing. At least once each week, the dog’s teeth should be brushed, the ears cleaned, and the toenails trimmed.

Life expectancy

12 to 14 years

Temperament

These are family dogs, and they enjoy the company of children as much as they do adults. They are not happy when left alone for too many hours each day. This breed is a good alarm dog – they bark at strangers – but should never be used as a guard dog.

Activity level

These dogs need moderate exercise each day. They enjoy walks and a good playtime.

Training

The Keeshond is bright, easy to train, and fun.
