Irish Setter

Overview

The Irish Setter was bred to serve as both a hunting dog and a companion. His proud bearing and lovely red coat combines to make a strikingly handsome dog.

Height

25 to 27 inches

Weight

60 to 70 pounds

Color

A rich red

Coat type

Long and flowing, especially on the backs of the legs, tail and belly.

Grooming

The coat should be brushed daily to remove tangles and matts. The neck and feet are often trimmed to create a clean look. At least once each week, the dog's teeth should be brushed, the ears cleaned, and the toenails trimmed.

Life expectancy

10 to 12 years

Temperament

These are silly dogs who love to dance and bounce and play. They are good with kids although puppies may be too rough.

Irish Setters are active dogs who need vigorous daily exercise. They enjoy many canine sports.

Training

Training is needed as Irish Setters are big, bouncy dogs; however, the training can also be a challenge as puppies are silly and slow to mature mentally.
