German Shepherd Dog
Overview
The German Shepherd was created by Captain Max von Stephanitz to be a versatile working dog, and he succeeded. This breed has a worldwide reputation as a superior law enforcement dog, guide and service dog, drug detection dog, and a search and rescue dog.
Height
22 to 26 inches tall
Weight
70 to 90 pounds
Color
Red or rust with a black saddle, all black, or silver sable.
Coat type
The outer coat is medium length, straight, and coarse with a thick, dense undercoat.
Grooming
The German Shepherd's coat rarely tangles, but it does shed and weekly brushing is needed to keep the coat clean and to remove dead hair. During heavy shedding, usually the spring and fall, daily brushing will help keep hair in the house to a minimum. The ears and teeth need weekly cleaning, and the toenails should be trimmed on the same schedule.
Life expectancy
9 to 11 years
Temperament
This is a very loyal, protective dog who can easily become a one person dog. The German Shepherd is smart and intelligent, playful at times but also very dignified. When raised with children, he is the best playmate but will not tolerate rough play between children.
Activity level
This breed needs vigorous daily exercise plus a good walk plus a long play session. These dogs are not couch potatoes and in fact, have a tendency to be very busy. They will patrol the house and yard constantly to watch for trespassers.
Training
Early training is very important. Keep in mind these dogs were bred to work and if training is not begun early, they will make up their own rules! Socialization is also important, to other people and dogs, so that the German Shepherd does not become aggressively protective.
