Doberman Pinscher

Overview

This breed was created by Louis Dobermann in Germany to serve as a companion dog as well as a working dog. Experts feel that several breeds were used to create this breed, including Rottweilers, German Pinschers, Manchester Terriers, and perhaps a short-haired shepherd dog.

Height

24 to 28 inches tall

Weight

60 to 85 pounds

Color

Black, red, fawn, or blue (a grey-silver color); all with red/rust markings

Coat type

Short, hard, and thick.

Grooming

Each week brush the coat, clean the ears and teeth, and trim the toenails.

Life expectancy

10 to 12 years

Temperament

Contrary to the public perception of the breed, Dobies are affectionate and silly. They are also loyal, dedicated and protective. Puppies may be too rough for small children but they are great companions for older kids and adults.

Activity level

This is a very athletic dog who needs vigorous daily exercise.

Training

Puppies need early socialization as an overprotected, undersocialized Doberman can quickly turn into a problem dog. Training is also important as these dogs are bright and inquisitive.

Common Health Problems

  • Wobbler's syndrome
  • Von Willebrand's disease
  • Cardiomyopathy
