Dalmatian

Overview

Dalmatians are one of the most recognizable of breeds. Everyone can identify these striking white dogs with spots. Originally bred to run and protect horses from predator attacks, Dalmatians today still have an affinity for horses.

Height

19 to 23 inches tall

Weight

45 to 60 pounds

Color

White with black or liver spots

Coat type

Short and fine.

Grooming

Each week the coat should be brushed with a soft bristle brush, and the ears and teeth need to be cleaned. Toenails should also be trimmed weekly.

Life expectancy

11 to 14 years

Temperament

These dogs are bright and enthusiastic but they can also be stubborn and independent. Young dogs are too rowdy for very small children but are great companions for older kids.

Activity level

Bred to run with horses (and to be able to keep up with running horses) this breed needs vigorous daily exercise that includes a good run. Many owners teach their Dalmatian to run alongside a bicycle. Without this exercise, Dalmatians can get into trouble.

Training

Early socialization is important as Dalmatians can be wary of strange people. Socialization to other dogs is vital, too, as this breed can be unfriendly towards unknown dogs.
