Dachshund

Overview

These long bodied, low slung dogs originated in Germany where they were used as hunting dogs. The name Dachsund means badger hunter.

Height

Most are between 10 and 15 inches tall although some miniatures may be smaller.

Weight

Standard size Dachshunds weigh between sixteen and 32 pounds. The Miniature Dachshunds weigh less than 11 pounds.

Color(s)

Black and red (or rust) and red are the most common coat colors although other colors, such as cream and grey, are also seen.

Coat type

Dachshunds will have one of three coat types.

  • Smooth coat: shiny and tight to the skin
  • Wirehaired coat: coarser and terrier-like with a soft undercoat.
  • Longhaired coat: silky, wavy, and soft with slightly longer hairs on the tail and legs.

Grooming

The three different coat types have varying grooming requirements.

  • Smooth coat: easy to care for and needs only a brushing once a week with a soft bristled brush.
  • Wirehaired coat: should be combed and brushed twice weekly and several times a year the coat should be hand stripped to remove any dead hairs.
  • Longhaired coat: needs to be brushed and combed two to three times per week.

All Dachshunds need their ears cleaned, teeth cleaned, and toenails trimmed once a week.

Life expectancy

12 to 14 years.

Temperament

Dachshunds have a terrier ancestry and show it in their personalities; these dogs are watchful, wary of strangers, and tenacious. They need socialization as puppies to introduce them to friendly people and friendly dogs. They can be great with children if the kids have been taught to play gently with the dog.

Activity level

Dachshunds love to play and need daily exercise. However, once they have gone for a walk and have chased the squirrels from the back yard, they will be more than willing to snuggle on the sofa.

Training

Dachshunds are bright but training these dogs can be a challenge. It's not that they can't learn; they can but they do not always see the need for training. A Dachsund trainer needs to figure out how to motivate his dog and then keep the dog's interest during training sessions. Dachshunds can be noisy barkers.

Common health problems
