Cocker Spaniel (American)
Overview
The Cocker Spaniel originated in England as a superb bird dog. Today, the American Cocker Spaniel and English Cocker Spaniel are quite different breeds.
Height
13 to 16 inches
Weight
24 to 30 pounds
Color
Cream, red, brown, black, black and tan, and white with patches of color.
Coat type
The silky coat is long and grows continually.
Grooming
The coat needs daily brushing and combing to prevent tangles. Most pet owners have the dog professionally groomed every four to six weeks to have the dog bathed, brushed out, and the hair trimmed. However, in between grooming appointments, the coat still needs to be brushed and combed. The ears and teeth need weekly cleaning and the toenails should be trimmed at the same time.
Life expectancy
13 to 15 years
Temperament
Most Cockers are happy and eager to play. These dogs are great companions with adults and children who are not too rough. Unfortunately, some Cockers are quiet and fearful. These dogs can also be quick to bite.
Activity level
Cockers are active and eager to go for walks, play ball, and chase the kids. They are also wonderful at many canine sports, including agility, flyball, and therapy dog work.
Training
Early socialization is very important, especially for those Cockers who tend to be quiet and worried. The dogs need to be introduced to friendly people and other dogs to counter this potentially fearful personality. Training (for dog and owner) is also important as Cockers know how cute they are and they are easily spoiled.
