Beagle
Overview
This is an ancient hunting hound of small size that originated in England. Beagles hunt by using their sensitive nose to follow scent trails and can do so for hours at a time.
Height
There are two sizes of Beagles, divided by their height at the shoulders:
- Under 13 inches tall
- Between 13 and 15 inches tall
Weight
Between 15 and 30 pounds.
Colors
The most recognizable color pattern is red and white with a black saddle across the back.
Coat type
Short, fine, and soft to the touch.
Grooming
The soft coat should be brushed once a week. The ears and teeth need to be cleaned weekly, too, and the toenails trimmed on the same schedule.
Life expectancy
14 to 15 years
Temperament
These are hunting dogs with strong instincts and should never be allowed to run free outside of a fenced in yard as they will eagerly follow any scent they find. Although good family dogs, they are not always interested in retrieving toys or balls. Good fun for a Beagle is following the scent of a rabbit.
Activity level
Daily exercise is important, but once they have had a chance to run, follow a trail, and chase a squirrel, Beagles are happy to relax for a while.
Training
Training a Beagle should begin early so that the puppy can learn household manners and social rules. Training is not always easy, though, as many Beagles live life with their nose to the ground. They can bay loudly, which many neighbors dislike intensely, but early training can help curb that instinct.
