American Bulldog
Overview
Many years ago, blood sports were popular in England. Dogs would fight bulls, bears, and other animals for the pleasure of an audience. When blood sports were outlawed, the dogs were used for many different purposes and served as watchdogs, hunting companions and even herding dogs.

20 to 26 inches tall

60 to 120 pounds

Short and coarse.
Grooming
The coat should be brushed weekly with a soft bristled brush. Each week the toenails should be trimmed and the ears and teeth cleaned.
Life expectancy
12 to 14 years
Temperament
This is a physically and mentally powerful dog who was bred to work. He will not be happy just hanging around the back yard but instead needs a job to do. Although puppies are too rough for very young children, he is a willing playmate for older kids. The American Bulldog is watchful, protective, and at times even aggressive towards strange people and dogs.
Activity level
Although not a hyperactive breed by any means, this can be an active breed. Vigorous exercise is needed every day so the dog can use his muscular body. This breed does well in several canine sports, including weight pulling and carting.
Training
American Bulldogs need early and continuing socialization to other people and dogs. This socialization can temper the breed's potential animosity towards strangers and other dogs. Training is also important, both so the owner can control the powerful dog, but also so the dog has a job to do.
