Pet ownership on the rise

62% of all households in the U.S. own at least one pet, according to the 2009-10 National Pet Owners Survey recently released by the American Pet Products Association (APPA). That equals 71.4 million households, the largest number of pet owners ever recorded.

In addition, dog visits to the veterinarian increased about 8% between 2006 and 2008, to an average of 2.8 times per year. Cat visits to the vet remained stable at 2.1 visits per year.

Pet obesity is still a concern. Vets reported 13% of dogs and 21% of cats they saw as obese. For more fun facts, click through the links.
